What is CBG?

With a growing interest in the industry, most people familiar with cannabis have heard of CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and their effects. But did you know there are many other similar and beneficial compounds in cannabis? An up and coming cannabinoid called cannabigerol (CBG) is a minor cannabinoid because of it's scarce (less than 1%) presence in most cannabis strains. It is nonetheless worth learning about for a number of reasons. CBG-A (cannabigerolic acid) is the chemical precursor of THCA, CBDA, and CBCA.  Enzymes in the plant break CBGA down and direct it toward becoming one of these three compounds, depending on the genetics and environment. Breeders are experimenting with genetic manipulation and cross-breeding of plants in order to obtain higher yields of CBG. Studies show that CBG works to fight inflammation, pain, nausea and slows the proliferation of cancer cells. Strains high in CBG display a multitude of potential health benefits including working as a neuroprotectant, having antioxidant properties, aiding with skin ailments as an antibacterial and antifungal agent, appetite stimulation, treatment of gastrointestinal disorders, inflammation reduction, and even shows promise in fighting cancer. Additionally, research has shown it lowering intraocular pressure, which may benefit glaucoma patients.
